dasani goes green

As I was taking a refreshing sip of water in class a few days ago I noticed that the look of my $1.25 vending machine Dasani water bottle was different...

What is a plant bottle???? I investigated.

A PlantBottle from Dasani (owned by Coca-Cola) is a bottle made of petroleum and 30% plant-based materials, according to www.environmentalleader.com. The plant based materials are made from sugar cane.

This is a new push from Coca-Cola to be more eco-friendly, reduce their carbon footprint, and boost their corporate social responsibility. Coca-Cola's Vision Statement reads, "Portfolio: Bring to the world a portfolio of quality beverage brands that anticipate and satisfy people's desires and needs...Planet: Be a responsible citizen that makes a difference by helping build and support sustainable communities."

Coke is supporting two facets of their vision by creating packaging that people want and packaging that is better for the environment.

Devil's Advocate Questions:
1. How much more will it cost the consumer?
2. Where are they getting the "plant based materials, sugar, etc.?
3. Is the new raw materials ethically harvested?

Environmentalleader.com says that Coke plans on expanding into their flavored waters and vitamin water sometime in 2010. Hopefully some of those questions can be answered then...
